Who I Am

jayson mugshot c bw_edited.jpg

I direct and produce non-fiction content for Australia (my birthplace), Argentina and the US.

Storytelling is a fundamental part of who I am. The first time I heard the word "Yugoslavia" was on my dad's VHS tapes. Camera in-hand, my father travelled across Italy in the 90s as a seasonal sheep shearer; the Slavic men were exiled farm workers making a fraction of his wage. Those tapes were played back to us as kids, and we learned about the world through his working-class eyes. I grew up in the "bush", a.k.a. rural Australia, among agriculture workers blowing into town from all corners, and with Noongar Aboriginal people who've been yarning there for over 60,000 years. I was a cable news junkie until I left home to live in Argentina in my 20s.

In Argentina, I worked as a newspaper journalist and deputy editor in chief for English-language news publications. First, for the prestigious "Buenos Aires Herald" and later its offshoot for the Perfil media conglomerate "Buenos Aires Times". In Australia, I trained for 3 years as an archive researcher under the mentorship of archive producer Lisa Savage of Savage Archive. I also produce independent theatre in Sydney.

My Work

My  feature documentary "Messenger on a White Horse" (2018) profiled the work of Robert Cox, former editor of the Buenos Aires Herald, who bravely investigated the crimes of Argentina's infamous 1976-83 dictatorship. This spawned "Norita" (2024), a feature-length tribute to one of the founding member of the iconic Mothers of Plaza de Mayo resistance movement in Argentina, Norita Cortiñas — a  former "housewife" whose son's disappearance in 1977 became the catalyst for her formidable transformation into a power player in the country's activist community. The project enjoyed the backing of Jane Fonda.

I have a slate of new projects in development in Australia and Argentina.
